For those of you who may be familiar with the TV show, The Handmaid’s Tale, you may know that Offred’s (Elia) role as a Handmaid includes providing sex-linked services to powerful men in order to keep them alive. You may also know that she is referred to as “avirgin,” which literally translates to “maid” in English, and that she must take a “Maid’s Oath” to be a Handmaid. (1)
While the show definitely glamorizes the profession of a Handmaid, the reality is that most women in real life aren’t so fortunate as to be able to enjoy the same lifestyle as the Handmaids. Instead, they have to cope with the “traditional” roles of wife or girlfriend, mother, caretaker, homemaker, and/or student. (2)
Does this sound like you? Do you wake up every morning wanting to be a Handmaid instead of the woman you really are?
If so, you’re in luck because the University of Florida has you covered. UF’s School of Marketing offers a bachelor’s degree program specifically designed for working women that want to enter the field or simply supplement their career. The university has also implemented an online MBA program that allows working students to enroll and complete their studies without needing to give up their jobs. (3)
Marketing is a broad field, and while it often associates with advertising, branding, and sales, it goes far beyond those aspects. The main focus of the marketing program at the University of Florida is to train students to become effective communicators whose primary goal is to promote products and services that will make a difference in the marketplace. (4)
This is very different from what you’d typically find in a more traditional marketing program, where you’re usually taught to target the general public (i.e., the “greater” audience) and to design advertising that will appeal to as many people as possible. Instead, the University of Florida’s marketing program wants to teach you how to work effectively with a specific audience in mind: people that are interested in the products or services you promote. (5)
To achieve this, the university provides you with a course load that is not only challenging but also very relevant to your desired career path. For example, the university’s business marketing degree program provides you with a strong base in marketing management, while also giving you the opportunity to specialize in areas such as digital marketing, social media, or sales.
