Launching a new business can be tough, especially when you’re doing it all on your own. The good news is that the rise of online marketplaces mean there’s now a way for you to get support and engage with potential customers without needing to be in a physical location.
Online marketplaces like Shopify, Bigcommerce, and Etsy make it easy for small business owners to manage their entire store from the convenience of their laptop or mobile device. Launching a business online gives you the flexibility to offer your products worldwide and to have your shipments arrive within a few days. Plus, you can scale up and down as needed to accommodate any volume.
If you’re interested in expanding your reach and getting more sales, you can use Pinterest to discover unique products that your audience might appreciate. Whether you sell clothing, accessories, or home decor, you can use Pinterest to discover and curate content that’s relevant to your target audience.
This article will guide you through the steps to set up a basic Pinterest account and to start gathering and using information to drive sales. With Pinterest, you can use several different strategies to gain traction and drive sales–from simply growing your audience to engaged pinners who follow your every move. This article will teach you how to use Pinterest for marketing your online businesses, but it also contains useful information for those who want to get started with Pinterest but don’t know where to begin.
Set Up Your Pinterest Account
To get started, simply head to Pinterest and create a new account. Once you’ve created a new account, you’ll be taken to the Home page, which will look something like this:
From here, you can begin by exploring the different themes and styles available and selecting the one that feels most appropriate for your brand. You can click on the themes in the top right corner to see different sample designs. You can continue exploring the site and following the on-screen tutorials to learn more about using Pinterest. When you’re ready to take the leap and begin using the site, simply scroll down and click on the Create account button to continue.
Organize Your Favorites
After you’ve created your account, you can begin organizing your favorite pins. To do this, simply click on the three-dot menu button in the top right corner of the site and select Favorites. You’ll see all of your pins organized into three separate lists–favorites, followed, and saved.
You can continue adding more lists as needed and name them whatever you like. Once you’ve added all of your favorite pins, you can begin following them to see what else they pin about. If you want to track the performance of your favorite pins, you can follow the steps outlined in the following section.
Create Boards For Your Brand
Once you’ve sorted your pins, you can begin creating boards to organize and showcase your content. To create a new board, simply click on the two-dot menu button in the top right corner of the home page and select New board. Name your board and select a niche or topics that you want to focus on. For example, if you’re creating a board to showcase fashion pins, you might name it Fashion and begin curating content that relates to your target audience. You can add more topics or niches as needed.
A good rule of thumb is to make a board for every category that you can think of. This will make it easier for your audience to discover content that relates to them. Once you’ve created the board, you can add pins that are relevant to the topic or niche you’ve chosen. To add a pin, simply click on the three-dot menu button in the top right corner of the site and select “Add a pin.” Your pin will appear in your board’s featured area. From here, you can click on the star next to any individual pin to show it more prominently in your board. You can also click on the three-dot menu button to hide or show any individual pin. If you’d like to make a broader change to the look of your board, you can click on any individual pin to learn more about editing its content or hiding it altogether. You can also click on the cog in the upper left corner of the pin’s information area to edit its privacy settings. You can do this for broad audience or only for you to see.
Creating a board is easy, but it can also be a lot of work. Make sure that you create a new board for every category and subcategory that you can think of. This will make it easier for your audience to discover content that relates to them. You can use the categories and subcategories available to you to form a theme for your board. For example, if you’re creating a board to showcase fashion pins and you see that most of your pins are related to clothes, you might want to create a board named Fashion and use its contents to create subcategories such as Men’s Fashion, Women’s Fashion, and Accessories.
You’ll notice that some boards are marked private, hide board pins, and restricted, while others are not. Your first instinct might be to hide your pins on a private board, but this can actually have the opposite effect. Your audience might find the content more appealing if it’s not hidden and restricted. Restricted boards and hide boards can also make your content more discoverable by potential customers. When you post content to a private or hide board, only those you’ve invited can see it. In order to create a public or restricted board, you must have at least 500 followers. This is a good place to start if you want to build a following on Pinterest.
Analyze Your Performance
Once you’ve created a board and begun adding pins to it, you can track the performance of your board’s contents in two different ways. First, you can use the site’s analytics to follow the number of times that a specific pin was clicked on or repinned. To access this information, once you’ve added a pin to your board, you can click on its icon and select “View stats.” This will bring up a small window with all of the information regarding the pin’s performance in the form of clicks and impressions as compared to your total followers and the average amount of time spent on each page when people click through to it. You can also see the number of times that specific content was repinned by others.
The second place you can track board performance is in the site’s Insights section. This is where you can find all of the information regarding your board’s popularity within the site–including the number of times that content from your board was shared on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
If you decide that one board isn’t enough to track the performance of, you can create a dashboard for each one and track the stats there as well. Simply click on the two-dot menu button in the upper right corner of the site and select Settings. Then, under My board, click on the little globe icon to bring up a dropdown menu of your existing boards and select the one you’d like to track from here.
You can continue to create additional dashboards for other topics or areas of interest to you. Just remember to create a new one for each board you have and to track the stats regarding these boards separately.
Amass A Following
Now that you’ve created a basic Pinterest account and are tracking its performance, you can start using various methods to gain traction and draw in potential customers. One of the most effective ways to do this is to follow and engage with other users.
To do this, you can either follow people in return or follow topics and groups. To follow people, simply click on the follow button next to their profile photo (if they have one) or the name of the person. This will add them to your list of followers. You can also find people to follow in your local area by searching for them on the site. Once you’ve found a user who seems to be following your target audience, you can double-check their profile by clicking on their username (the small black dot next to their name) and selecting “View profile.”
If you choose to follow topics and groups, you can find relevant articles and information regarding your niche or area of interest. To do this, you can use the site’s search bar to search for topics or names of people and publications that are relevant to your brand. Make sure that you don’t overuse this feature as it can cause your account to be flagged for spam–but it’s a useful tool to have when needed.
Once you’ve found a relevant topic or group, you can begin following them. To do this, simply click on the three-dot menu button in the top right corner of the site and select “Join topic or group.” This will connect you with the group’s administrators who will be able to add you to its list of followers. You can also ask questions and engage with other group members.
