According to Built In India, there are roughly 1.4 million people working in the Indian online marketing industry, and this figure is expected to double by next year.

This makes it one of the largest industries in the country with an attractive growth rate. Despite its growing popularity, the industry is still largely unorganised. There are no clear career paths, and opportunities for experienced professionals are scarce.

Median Annual Wages

The average wage for a senior manager or director in the sector is approximately £37,500, and there is great variability in pay across different Indian cities. For example, in Delhi the average wage is £38,000, while in Mumbai it is £27,500. The most in-demand jobs in the sector are for digital marketers, social media managers and content strategists, according to Built In India.

The demand for these jobs far outweighs the supply, which creates an opportunity for freelancers and independent contractors to get in on the action.

Short Ontime

According to Built In India, clients in the sector value short ontime delivery and the ability to provide live support. About 77% of the respondents in the study value delivering quality content on-time, and 72% value the ability to provide live support through an online marketing agency.

The study also revealed that 41% of the respondents expect their content strategist to be actively involved in the process of creating content, while 34% want them to take a more passive role.

Skillsets

The Indian online marketing industry is highly specialised, with particular strengths in areas such as SEO, content strategy and growth hacking. The ability to learn new skills and specialise in a particular area makes the sector highly appealing. In fact, 43% of the respondents in Built In India’s study said that they expect their content strategist to have extensive knowledge in various platforms and channels, while 37% want them to have in-depth knowledge in a single area.

There is also a heavy focus on data, with 71% of the respondents saying they consider it an essential skill, and 48% valuing it highly. According to the study, 29% of the respondents don’t consider data gathering and analysis to be important skills, while 17% are not sure.

Data entry and web analytics are among the most in-demand jobs in the sector, with 23% and 21% of the respondents respectively valuing these roles highly. On the other hand, 17% of the respondents are seeking a Sales Coordinator job, mostly because of the varied responsibilities that come with the role. 12% of the respondents are looking for a marketing manager job, as they want to be in charge of marketing campaigns and work with various stakeholders such as sales and communications to drive growth.

According to Built In India, the preferred place to find work is through your existing network, followed by digital marketing agencies and finally, solo promoters. The top three places to find work are London, New York and Paris, with the UK having the most jobs listed. This could be because a lot of the workers in the sector are based in the UK, or it could be because those are the places where the jobs are.
