Looking to start an online marketing company? Choosing a name for your new business can be both exhilarating and overwhelming at the same time. Exhilarating because you have the opportunity to craft a brand that perfectly matches your business. Overwhelmed because there are so many other businesses with the same or similar name already. What to do? A little research can go a long way. Here are some helpful tips on how to choose the perfect name for your online marketing company.
Tip #1
Do your research. Before you make a decision, you should know as much as possible about the name you have in mind. First off, make sure the name isn’t trademarked. If it is, you’ll need to find a different one. You can use the following resources to search for the perfect name:
- US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
- Trademark Office (USTRO)
- Internet Trademark Clearinghouse (ITMC)
- Attorney.com’s Trademark Report
- Search Engines
Secondly, check out the name in different contexts. You should consider different spellings and grammatical variations. For example, “XYZ Marketing” is pretty cool, but “XYZ Enterprises” or “XYZ Inc.” would be quite a mouthful. Also, make sure the name isn’t too similar to a well-known brand. You don’t want to infringe on anyone’s trademark. Last but not least, make sure the name isn’t already in use by someone else. You can enter the name in the following places:
- Trademark Office (USTRO)
- Internet Trademark Clearinghouse (ITMC)
- Yellow Book (YB)
- Superbrand (SB)
- BizEaze (BEZ)
- Domain Name Registrations (DNR)
- Black Book (BB)
Thirdly, try out different names. Once you’ve found a name that’s perfect for your business, try out some other variations of it. For example, if you found “XYZ Marketing,” you can try out “XYZ Management.” Or, if you found “XYZ Consulting,” you can try out “XYZ Institute.”
Tip #2
Do you have a favorite sports team or athlete? If so, play on that. “Root Sports” is a perfect example of taking advantage of a sports team’s name. The name itself is fairly cool, but what’s even better is that it’s an all-sports-related name. If you’re unable to come up with a unique name, you can try out these popular team names:
- New York Jets/Jets
- Boston Celtics/Celtics
- Los Angeles Lakers/Lakers
- Chicago Bears/Bears
- Houston Astros/Astros
- Atlanta Falcons/Falcons
- Dallas Cowboys/Roughriders
If you’re still stuck, you can try the following:
