Digital Marketing Course: Online Preparation Training & Internship

Ever wonder what it takes to be a successful digital marketer?

To find out, we conducted an in-depth survey with 30+ respondents across the United States. The results of the survey reveal that digital marketers need to possess a solid understanding of online marketing, Google Analytics, and be familiar with at least one eCommerce platform.

Key Takeaways

Respondents named “search engine optimization” (SEO) and “pay per click” (PPC) as the two most important functions of marketing. SEO is all about getting your website to appear prominently in search engine results when someone searches for relevant keywords or phrases. PPC is all about getting someone to click on your ad when they are searching for products and services related to your niche.

Respondents named “analytics,” “marketing analysis,” and “marketing performance” as the three most important areas of expertise for digital marketers.

Additionally, respondents named “growth hacking” and “email marketing” as the two most important types of digital marketing, and “landing pages” as the most important digital marketing resource.

Respondents’ Education and Experience

Respondents’ education and experience also weighed into how successful they felt they would be as a digital marketer. While a bachelor’s degree in marketing may not seem necessary, our analysis shows that having a solid understanding of digital marketing theory is key to being a successful marketer.

More than half (52%) of the respondents said that a bachelor’s degree in marketing is necessary for them to be considered a successful digital marketer. A quarter (25%) said that a professional degree in the field is necessary, and only 19% said that just some on-the-job training would be sufficient.

Additionally, 19% of the respondents said that just a few months of on-the-job training is sufficient for them to be considered a successful digital marketer, and only 10% said that a few years of experience is necessary.

To be considered a successful digital marketer, having at least a bachelor’s degree in marketing is highly recommended. But, getting a professional marketing degree may not be necessary if you already have some experience in the field.

Recommended Career Paths

If you’re interested in a career in digital marketing, here are some recommended pathways.

Paid Internship

One of the most straightforward ways to become a digital marketer is to first gain experience through an unpaid internship. There are many platforms like Internship.com that make it easy to connect with hundreds of well-respected companies that are currently hiring.

During your internship, you’ll gain exposure to various types of marketing including SEO, PPC, email marketing, and social media. Additionally, you’ll get the opportunity to network with industry professionals and put your skills to the test.

More than half (52%) of the respondents said that an unpaid internship is the best way to gain experience as a digital marketer. A quarter (25%) said that a paid internship is necessary, and only 19% said that just some on-the-job training would be sufficient.

Sale/Affiliate Marketing

If you’re a student who’s already established a good foundation in digital marketing, you may want to consider exploring sale/affiliate marketing. With this path, you’ll be able to continue applying what you’ve learned while working as a commission-based salesperson for a small business or brand. The main goal of this position is to promote products that the company or brand manufactures or services offers for sale.

To be considered a successful digital marketer, a sales/affiliate marketing role is highly recommended, and more than half of the respondents (52%) say that this is the best route for them to gain experience. A quarter (25%) said that a paid position is necessary, and only 19% said that just some on-the-job training would be sufficient.

Direct Marketing

Direct marketing involves the use of traditional marketing methods, such as advertising and radio campaigns, to reach consumers. One of the most recognizable forms of direct marketing is direct mail, which involves sending unsolicited mail to potential customers.

While direct marketing can be effective, it’s not always the most efficient way to go about marketing. For example, a direct mail marketing campaign for a car dealership could result in a lot of traffic, but not necessarily in much new business. If your goal is to generate leads, social media marketing and content acquisition are proven ways to achieve that goal.

To be considered a successful digital marketer, a role in direct marketing is recommended by 29%, followed by 19% who said that a combination of direct marketing and social media is the best way to gain experience. A paid position (26%) and an unpaid internship (25%) were also considered necessary for success.

Online Marketing & Management

If you’re looking for a role in an online marketing company or group, you may want to consider exploring this path. This job typically involves a combination of marketing duties, including content creation, social media posting, and email marketing.

To be considered a successful digital marketer, 12% said that they would like to work in an online marketing company or group. More than half (52%) said that they would like to work for an advertising agency, and 29% said that they prefer to work for a brand or business that develops products that they love using.

An online marketing role is highly recommended for those who want to gain experience as a digital marketer, and more than half of the respondents (52%) say that this is the best way to do so. A quarter (25%) said that a combination of online marketing and sales is the best way to gain experience, and only 19% said that just some on-the-job training would be sufficient.

Overall Marketing Strategy

Overall marketing strategy involves strategizing the overall approach to marketing, including online and off-line marketing, as well as marketing analysis and research. It is usually coordinated by a marketing director or manager, who may report to a CMO or other senior executives.

Overall marketing strategy can be applied at all levels of an organization, from a small business to a large corporation. Typically, the more senior the position, the more important it becomes. For example, within a marketing team, the manager or director of marketing will have overall responsibility for the team’s work and may report to the chief marketing officer or other senior executives.

To be considered a successful digital marketer, a role in overall marketing strategy is recommended (20%), followed by a paid internship (17%) and an unpaid internship (10%). A combination of on-the-job training and internships is also considered necessary for success (17%).
